WORKSHOP – Rheinberger : Abendlied (Evening Song)
SUNDAY NOVEMBER 1, 11H EST
For this live workshop, The Gesualdo Six have chosen one of their favourite pieces: a sacred motet by Josef Rheinberger, entitled Abendlied (Evening Song). Rheinberger first penned this work in 1855 at the age of 15. It is perhaps his most famous choral work, which looks backward to the great sacred music of the Renaissance.
Since the fourth century, the service of Compline has marked the end of the day, ushering in the darkness of the night. Abendlied is a beautiful example of this ancient tradition of evening songs, which inspired The Gesualdo Six’ most recent album, Fading. If you would like to hear more works inspired by dusk, we invite you to listen to their album: CLICK TO LISTEN
Format of the workshop:
The workshop will begin with one of the singers leading a warm-up, focusing on the connection between the body and the breath.
A video of The Gesualdo Six perfoming Abendlied will then be played, and instruction will be given by the G6 on aspects of the music (phrasing, technique to sustain long lines, tessitura), as well as on the interpretation and pronunciation of the German text.
The workshop will conclude with everyone singing through to the G6 video of Abendlied.
