Why do some courses require pre-registration?

How do I register and prepare for a master class, an intensive program, or chamber music?

We’ve compiled a handy list of guidelines for you to consult to help you make the most of your music retreat experience!

Why do some classes require pre-registration?

Participants will select most of their classes after the welcome meeting on Sunday evening, however certain classes require pre-registration due to limited capacity, and because they require advance preparation.

How do register for pre-registration classes?

After you have made your program and lodging reservation, you will receive a link to complete the Part 2 registration form. This form will enable you to reserve courses requiring pre-registration. If you need to rent a harp, viola da gamba, guitar or double bass, you will also be able to reserve your rental instrument at that time.

Who are pre-registration classes for?

It depends on the class. Some are open to everyone, others are intended for specific skill levels or age groups. The information for all the pre-registration classes will be included in the Part 2 registration form. We’ve also created some guidelines for you to consult in the next section of this page.

Chamber music requirements and information:

Chamber music program requirements:

  • Pre-registration is mandatory.
  • Level: Intermediate to advanced.
  • Pre-formed groups are welcome.
  • Individual participants will be matched with others at similar skill levels.
  • For winds and piano, only those of intermediate plus and advanced level will be considered.
  • Recorder, guitar, trombone, saxophone, trumpet, and singers are generally not admitted to the chamber music program except if they are part of a pre-formed group. Brass players are admitted to the program in Week 5.

Registration process for chamber music participants:

  • After you have made your program and lodging reservation, you will receive a link to complete the Part 2 registration form. This form will enable you to reserve for the chamber music program.
  • After you have registered for chamber music, you will receive a link to download the chamber music form with instructions for submitting the form.
  • The chamber music coordinator will assign groups and distribute repertoire after the registration deadline has passed.

Please note: Late registrations cannot be accommodated due to the extensive preparation required for group assignments and repertoire selection.

How to prepare for your masterclass:

What happens during a masterclass?

  • A masterclass is intended to provide in-depth feedback on technique and interpretation to individual participants in an encouraging and supportive group setting.
  • Participants perform one at a time while receiving direct coaching or critique from the instructor. The rest of the group observes and learns from the feedback.
  • Participants will be accompanied by a pianist provided by CAMMAC (unless it is a piano masterclass).

Who are masterclasses for?

  • Masterclasses are for intermediate to advanced musicians who are comfortable performing and seeking to refine their skills in a specific area.

How should I prepare for my masterclass?

  • Participants must prepare one solo piece of their choice in advance of the program week. Your chosen piece should be 2-3 minutes long. This will be the focus of your work during the masterclass sessions, so thorough preparation is essential for a meaningful learning experience.
  • Please bring three copies of your music: one each for the accompanist, instructor, and yourself.
  • IMPORTANT: If you do not come to the class with a piece prepared in advance, you will not be able to participate actively in your masterclass; you will only be permitted to observe the other students’ rehearsals.

What is the difference between a masterclass and an intensive program?

  • A masterclass is one period per day, while an intensive program will include several periods per day.
  • An intensive program offers a more comprehensive and immersive experience than a masterclass. It focuses on developing skills and knowledge in a particular area of music through a combination of lessons, workshops, individual practice, and ensemble work.
  • Preparation requirements for intensive programs depend on the teacher. If there are preparations required, the teacher will contact you before the program.

All masterclasses require pre-registration.

  • Please be sure to register before your week’s deadline.
  • If you wish to register after the deadline has passed, please contact customer service (reservations@cammac.ca), but please note that we may not be able to accommodate your request.
