Born in Mexico City, Rafael Sánchez Guevara plays the viola da gamba and the cello, and is interested in the historical and rhetorical interpretation of various musical styles.
He holds a degree in classical cello from the National School of Music of the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM). In 2014, he obtained a master’s degree in viola da gamba from the University of Montreal, under the direction of Margaret Little. A recipient of several international scholarships, Mr. Sánchez Guevara has done internships and exchanges in Vancouver, Boston, France and Monaco.
Since 2010, Rafael has been a member of La Fontegara, one of the pioneering early music ensembles in Mexico, with whom he performs in the main festivals in Mexico, as well as in Spain, Latin America, the United States and Canada, as part of the Montreal Baroque Festival. The ensemble has recorded the CDs Godfather (2011) and the double album Arca de Música (2017) for the English label Meridian Records, containing works from the Mexican music archives of the 18th century.
Now living again in his hometown, he is looking forward to teaching viola at UNAM and to organizing and performing concerts with musicians of various backgrounds.
