FRIDAY APRIL 10 TO SUNDAY APRIL 12, 2026

LATINIDAD!
A fun and exciting weekend music retreat inspired by the musics of Latin America.
Come celebrate the diversity and vitality of Latin American musical traditions during this adults-only getaway weekend at the CAMMAC Music Centre.
Latinidad invites musicians of all levels to explore the musical genres and practices of the Americas, from Argentinian tango and Dominican merengue to pan-Latino styles including salsa and Latin jazz.

PROGRAM HIGHLIGHTS

✚ Canadian jazz singer Rachel Beausoleil leads vocal technique sessions and singing classes exploring breath and tone, expressive singing, and stylistic nuance in Latin American repertoires. Known for her multilingual performances and her work across jazz and world music traditions, Rachel brings deep stylistic insight to help singers gain confidence and interpret this music with authenticity.
✚ The instrumental ensemble, directed by Gabriel Genest, offers an opportunity for participants to develop listening skills and musical responsiveness.
✚ Choral sessions offer a fun and supportive environment for participants to explore selections from Latin American repertoire, for all levels of singers.
✚ Guitar and ukulele classes with Lynn Ranger introduce stylistic elements found across Latin American genres, including rhythm, phrasing, and ensemble playing.
✚ Percussion sessions focus on rhythm and coordination, with a practical, hands-on approach suitable for all levels.
✚ Gentle yoga sessions with Patricia Garcia are offered to support relaxation, breathing, and body awareness throughout the weekend – a welcome complement to an active musical schedule.
✚ Beyond the classes and workshops, the weekend comes alive with a cabaret featuring instructors and participants, a campfire sing-along, and to cap off the retreat, an informal demonstration where participants share excerpts from the weekend’s repertoire.

REPERTOIRE
GUITAR AND UKULELE:
Ojos Azules
A traditional Andean melody with roots in Bolivian and Peruvian folk traditions known for its memorable, expressive tune. It is widely heard across Bolivia, Peru, and Chile and lends itself beautifully to expressive duet playing.
Cururu
Rooted in a Brazilian folk rhythm and call-and-response singing tradition, this piece features lively rhythmic interplay well suited to group music-making and improvisation.
Arrangements use simple harmonies for guitar or ukulele and can be played either from notes or chords. One part is geared toward beginner note reading, while the second part is suited to the teacher or a more advanced player. Chords can be simplified for ukulele beginners so everyone can join in.
INSTRUMENTAL ENSEMBLE:
Rumba Latina (Victor Lopez)
A Caribbean-style rumba built around a clear, engaging rhythmic pattern. The melody layers easily over the accompaniment, making it an enjoyable and approachable piece for small ensembles.
Chips and Salsa (Ed Kiefer)
A playful piece drawing on Latin grooves, full of syncopated rhythmic figures and call-and-response between sections. Its upbeat character lends itself well to ensemble work and brings great energy to group playing.
Back to Havana (Jeff Jarvis)
A vibrant jazz-Latin chart inspired by Havana’s distinctive rhythmic and textural language. Slightly more demanding, it suits groups with a higher playing level. This piece will be used as an additional option: the other two will be the primary focus, and Back to Havana may be added depending on time and participant level.
CHOIR:
BÉSAME MUCHO (Consuelo Velázquez)
This beloved Mexican bolero from 1940 features the slow, romantic rhythms characteristic of the genre. Its sweeping melodic lines and lush harmonies give singers opportunities to work on legato phrasing and emotional expression while exploring one of Latin America’s most enduring standards.
MAS QUE NADA (Jorge Ben Jor)
A 1963 Brazilian samba features syncopated rhythms and playful call-and-response patterns that challenge choirs to develop tight rhythmic precision. The Portuguese lyrics flow naturally with the driving groove, requiring singers to maintain rhythmic precision while capturing the joyful, energetic spirit of Brazilian music.
CANTAR! (Jay Althouse)
This energetic salsa work composed in the early 2000s celebrates the joy of singing with its rhythmically infectious melody. Combining English with simple, repetitive Spanish phrases, “Cantar!” (meaning “Sing!”) is a stylistically authentic piece that brings the vibrant sounds of Cuban salsa to the choral repertoire with passion and flair.
