Based in Montreal, Émile Cartier is a versatile and dedicated musician performing on both double bass and electric bass. A graduate of the Université de Montréal, he earned both a Bachelor’s and a Master’s degree in classical double bass under the guidance of Yannick Chênevert. During his studies, he developed a strong affinity for orchestral repertoire and chamber music. Earlier in his training, he studied electric bass with Rémi-Jean Leblanc and Dan Gigon, building a solid foundation in jazz, pop, and improvisation. More recently, he continued his professional development at the Domaine Forget Academy, studying with distinguished double bassists including Nicholas Walker, David Allen Moore, and Étienne Lafrance.

As a freelance musician, Émile performs with a wide range of ensembles and projects, from early music groups to choral ensembles. He has also appeared as a section double bassist with the symphony orchestras of Gatineau, Sherbrooke, and Côte-Nord. As both co-arranger and double bassist, he contributes to the ensembles Chamade (Gabrielle Cloutier) and Bleu Vésuve (Camille Rosset-Balcer). He is valued for his expressive musicianship, strong ensemble playing, and collaborative spirit.

A passionate educator, Émile has been teaching double bass for nearly a decade. His experience spans group instruction with organizations such as the Orchestre des jeunes du Mont-Royal and the Université de Montréal School of Music, as well as private teaching at Collège Notre-Dame, Collège Esther-Blondin, and through his own studio. Comfortable in a variety of teaching environments, he is known for an approach that is dynamic, rigorous, and above all, engaging and enjoyable for students.
