Matys Colpron is a multidisciplinary artist from Montreal who began his journey in composition and music production at the age of 17. Born into a family of Baroque musicians, he fell in love with jazz after discovering Charles Mingus and Wayne Shorter. Since 2017, he has been performing his original music, strongly influenced by jazz fusion—first with his ensemble Stay Safe, and eventually through his self-produced albums.
Through his collaboration with the group Green Screen, he explores electronic production and released his first solo album in 2021, titled Home-Cooked Beats.
While his albums are solo creations, his live performances take on a more traditional quintet format, with a strong emphasis on improvisation. His most significant and most recent project, Tragédie, is a series of four live sessions recorded in a church—an audiovisual experience that showcases his wide range of influences.
Matys Colpron also collaborated with trombonist Margaret Donovan to create the Façade Sextet in 2023. Now represented by Effendi Records, the group is set to release its debut EP, a musical collaboration featuring compositions from both co-directors.
Still in the early stages of a promising career, Matys Colpron aims to redefine the sound of instrumental jazz in Montreal through his eclectic, energetic, and contemporary compositions. He will be opening for Mike Stern at the Montreal Jazz Festival on June 29, 2025, at Théâtre Jean-Duceppe.
